Frank W. Hussey was a co-op pioneer and innovator, and for decades was at the forefront of cooperative activities in the United States. He was a builder of the Maine potato industry, helping form the Maine Potato Growers and the Maine Potato Council and serving as director of the National Potato Research and Marketing Advisory Board, as well as the Maine Farm Bureau. He chaired the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, helped found the Cooperative Development Foundation, was a director of the Agricultural Hall of Fame, and is credited as the one who convinced Secretary of Agriculture Freeman to establish an annual National Co-op Month observance. Even well into his retirement, Hussey continued to play an active role in cooperative development, and continued to play a leadership role with his advice and counsel to cooperatives nationwide.
